Sand by the Sea I is a contemporary fiber wall sculpture exploring organic texture and gentle movement through hand-knotted cotton rope and paper cords.
This piece continues my exploration of organic patterns found in coastal landscapes. Using natural raffia, cotton, and advanced knotting and weaving techniques, I explore how fiber can evoke the shifting textures of sand shaped by wind and tide.
Soft cascading strands create a flowing surface that feels calm and grounded, echoing the quiet rhythm of sand shaped by wind and tide. The form evokes a shoreline where textures shift slowly but continuously.
The piece was inspired by the subtle patterns left on sand after the tide recedes—marks that reveal both movement and stillness in nature. My process is intentionally slow and repetitive. I build the structure knot by knot, letting the fibers guide the final shape while I control the balance and flow.
